Party Animals
Turbonegro

There is a fine line between Gwar and Spinal Tap. For years Norwegian punk-cock rockers Turbonegro have ridden that line like a tight rope walker possessed. With their two seminal records Ass Cobra / Apocalypse Dudes they created an off color offensive brand of punk rock and roll that had been absent for years. They were the South Park of punk rock, smart and well thought out dick and fart jokes set to an undeniable energy, while the rest of punk rock was falling in love with our scenes Tom Green, the later albums by Blink 182.

Then Turbonegro broke up, and strangely they started to blow up. While they never saw much success while they were still around, after their demise their fan’s started singing their praises and people started to buy there record. Epitaph reissues Ass Cobra / Apocalypse Dudes and got the records back in stores and the band reunited. They released Scandinavian Leather to the cries of joy from their fans. While that record wasn’t that great, its weak moments were written off as the work of a band that was just getting back together. Well I hate to break it to you guys, but it wasn’t a fluke. After receiving the biggest press of their careers via a spot on Viva La Bam, the boys from Norway have released an always that finally falls off the type rope they’re teetered on for years. Party Animals rocks like a cross between Spinal Tap and Nerf Herder, and I don’t mean that as a compliment to either band.

Where there was once ballsy, funny and crass punk rock are now boring easy dick jokes. Blow Me Like the Wind would is something I’d expect from Blink, the once legendary Turbonegro. Almost every song on Party Animals sounds like it was dumbed down to insure another guest spot on Viva La Bam. It sounds compromised. But worst of all it just sounds boring. It pains me to say that. Sure there are flutters of the bands lost rock power, especially All My Friends Are Dead, but those moments are so few and far between it feels like a tease.

This doesn’t mean you should discount Turbonegro, as Ass Cobra / Apocalypse Dudes are still rocking, dare I say sexy, slabs of pure rock and roll. But some bands never overcome their first few records, and with each passing release it seems like Turbonegro are going to be one of those bands. It’s time the boys Sniff the Glove and hang it up, before they damage their legacy anymore.
